POMPEY'S PILLAR NP

Only remaining evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition is carved on the rock. Captain Clark carved his name on this rock he named Pompy's Pillar after the son of Sacagawea who was called Pompy. The date was July 25, 1906. All thirteen other times have since disappeared. Leaving their names and other evidence of their presence was an attempt to lay claim to the territory under the Doctrine of Discovery an international Law.
